(WVVA) A McDowell County man is teaching kids how to be winners, both on and off the tennis court.

Nathaniel Smith is the director of Grayhound Youth Sports and runs an after school tennis program at Kimball Elementary and Welch Elementary school.

Smith is receiving lots of recognition for the tennis program, including a certificate from Governor Jim Justice.

“It’s an honor,” said Smith. This means people are looking at the program and saying what a great job we’re doing with our young students in McDowell County.”

“We are just a little school trying to provide an opportunity for our students,” said Kristy East, Principal of Welch Elementary school.

The students are learning tennis skills like singles and doubles, but they’re also learning life skills to be applied off the court.

Smith is a past recipient of the Governor’s “Volunteer Service Award.”
