CITY OF BLUEFIELD, W.V.a (WVVA) According to City Manager Dane Rideout, The Grant Street Bridge is in worse condition than Division of Highways had thought.
“The salt damage is worse than anyone had imagined,” said Rideout. “It’s in the hands of Chris Bennett, the lead engineer of infrastructure for Norfolk Southern Railways.”
The city is facing three options with the bridge, repair it, replace it, or remove it.
“We expect the costs to be higher than $7 million,” said Rideout.
The board is hiring an engineering firm to also evaluate how to fix the bridge, which could come at a cost of $250,000.
Rideout says there will be a copy of the bridge inspection at City Hall so citizens can review the report.
The bridge was shut down in June after a partial DOH inspection revealed major structural deficiencies along the bridge.
