Virginia school bus aid accused of choking 12-year-old boy

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia school bus aid is accused of choking a 12-year-old student during a bus ride from a private school for students with behavioral health and intellectual disabilities.

News outlets report that 48-year-old John T. Wescott was arrested Monday and charged with strangulation, felony child abuse and misdemeanor assault.

Police say the Feb. 7 incident happened while the student was riding home from the Grafton School. Chesterfield County police Lt. Brad Conner says the possible assault happened after Wescott intervened in a “disruptive type of activity” that centered around the 12-year-old boy. But Conner says there was no illegal activity happening on the bus with the students.

Police say the boy was treated for injuries at a hospital and released. It’s unclear if Wescott has a lawyer who could comment.
