The Red Devils took the floor at the state basketball tournament for the first time since winning the Class AA title in 2011.
The lead belonged to Oak Hill after the first quarter, but the second saw the Eagles outscore their opponents 19-11. Because of the run, Robert C. Byrd led 26-20. The Eagles converted 22 points off of 14 Oak Hill turnovers, which proved to be the difference.
Robert C. Byrd took the game, 49-36.
Michael Beasley and Darrick McDowell each finished with 10 points for Oak Hill.
Afterwards, head Coach Benitez Jackson was pleased with his team’s effort, but felt the ball just didn’t bounce their way in the second half.
“You know I thought we were still in pretty good shape heading into the second half,” he said. “We knew they had the ball going out and we knew if we got a stop, we’d have good chance to score.”
“We felt like we were getting pretty good shots off on offense,” Jackson continued. “We just weren’t making them.”
The Red Devils finish the 2018-19 campaign with a record of 20-6.
