On Monday in Coal City, one state champion signed his National Letter of Intent.

Independence’s Mason Kump will study and wrestle at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida. Kump earned an individual state championship in the 195 pound weight class in 2019, and has also been a part of three state championship squads.

He knows what it is like to be part of a top-tier program at the high school level and feels he’ll be joining something similar at Southeastern.

“I wanted to be somewhere I felt comfortable and somewhere they had a really good coach that I liked,” Kump said. “I felt like I could grow in a room where there was other good people and be on a team that was striving to get a national championship.”

Kump will be about 12 hours from home, although he joked he might soon be able to cut down that travel time. He will study business management and aviation leadership beginning this fall in hopes to earn his commercial pilots license.
