Rays even up Mercer Cup series, 8-3

On Monday, the Princeton Rays hosted the Bluefield Blue Jays in the next installment of the Mercer Cup series.

With the game tied early, Princeton took a lead in the third inning. Luis Leon recorded an RBI groundout and Jake Guenther scored on a throwing error to put the Rays ahead 3-1.

Princeton led 4-1 in the fifth inning, when Bluefield’s Miguel Hiraldo narrowed the lead with a solo home run. But, the home team would double their total before the night was through, winning 8-3.

Matthew Peguero conceded two home runs, but still earned the win on the mound for Princeton. He pitched five innings, while allowing just six hits and striking out six batters.

The two teams will meet again in Bluefield on Saturday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m.
