In his first year as head coach at Montcalm, Adam Havens compiled a 2-8 record. But, the program believes that number in the win column could have been much higher.
“We felt like last year there were several times where if we executed one or two plays, the whole outcome of the game would have been different,” he said.
The focus thus far for the Generals in 2019 has been in the details. And, who better to set the example than the team’s nine seniors.
“You know, they’ve been contributing for three years now, this being their fourth year,” Havens said. “We’re expecting so much out of them.”
“We lost a couple key roles last year and it’s going to take some big shoes to fill,” added senior lineman Zach Sayers. “It’s gonna be really important for us seniors to step up and show these underclassmen how to run the team.”
The time for instruction and repetition has been cut short this year, however. Montcalm will open the season on Monday, August 26 at River View.
“We knew coming into the preseason that that was four less days of preparation,” Havens stated.
But, the early start date doesn’t concern the players. It’s just business as usual.
“It’s nothing we can’t adjust to,” said senior running back Brendan Warden. “We’ll be ready by that time.”
And this season, the Generals are making it their business to come out on top.
“I personally think we can have a winning season this year,” Sayers said confidently. “If we play like we can play football — play hard, practice hard — and win every play. That’s all we gotta do.”
Kickoff for Montcalm’s season opener will be at 7:30 p.m.
