2019 Camp Tour: Wyoming East Warriors

NEW RICHMOND — There is a different feel to the Wyoming East football program in 2019. A big reason why is new head coach, Larry Thompson.

“I played my high school ball down in Louisianan,” Thompson said. “Football is God down there and every Friday you wake up and you just know everywhere you go, everyone is excited for the game. I wanted to bring that culture here to Wyoming County.”

So far, it’s working.

“Man, you just walk around town and people come up to you — ‘how’s the team going, how’s the excitement, when’s the first game?’ We’re not used to that,” said senior quarterback Seth Ross.

“The community is really excited,” added senior wide receiver Jacob Bishop. “We’re really excited. Everybody’s excited, so we’re just grinding and getting ready for it.”

Last season, Thompson led Mount View to a 10-2 finish and brought the Golden Knights back to the playoffs for the first time in 12 years. This year, taking over a Warrior squad that finished 2-8 the year prior, he understands the pressure of his situation.

“When you get a new coach at any sport at any level, you’ve got expectations,” he admitted. “You have people saying this, saying that. Like the boys just said, with us, we’re just going to show up and go to work every day.”

Thompson inherits a group with plenty of experience, including an all senior offensive line and quarterback. There is plenty of talent, and with some hard work, a bounce back season could be in order. But, the players are willing to take things slowly.

“You hope playoffs,” Ross said. “You always set a goal at the beginning of the season, but we’re just going to take it one week at a time.”

“Everybody’s goal is just to do as good as you can,” Bishop echoed. “Everybody’s goal is the same thing — to win that championship. That’s what everybody strives for — perfection. Nobody ever reaches it, but that’s what everybody shoots for.”

The Warriors have the first week of the season free and will open with rival Westside on Friday, September 6.
