Overlooking Bluefield Ave. sits a 123-year old church, quietly watching the world pass it by. Grace United Methodist Church is its name.
The church first opened its doors in 1895. One may think that a final service would be a somber event, but today, it was a celebration.
"The mood today was very good and there were more people here than there has ever been since I’ve been the pastor. The people were reminiscing, sharing old memories, taking photographs, locking their memories in. It was very enjoyable," said Pastor Randy Sargent.
Despite the end of an era, the church still has plans to help the community once the doors are permanently locked.
"As a part of leaving the church, they had some funds left in their account and they chose to give that away to places in the Bluefield area and West Virginia," said Rev. Dr. Joe Kenaston.
