Severe weather potential today; bone-chilling tonight

Remaining Ad Time Ad - 00:00

Temperatures are warmer right now in the 60s with the highs raising into the 70s. Having spring like temperatures today means a potential for spring like storms. Severe weather is possible as our entire viewing area, except western Buchanan county, is now under an ENHANCED RISK for severe weather. This has increased since yesterday AM. This means that our conditions are more favorable towards severe weather development.

The main threat is still damaging, straight line winds. We could see wind gusts from 30-50mph and even higher in thunderstorms. Can’t completely rule out the threat for isolated tornadoes because of the wind fields. Our tornado parameter issued by the Storm Prediction Center is 5% over the viewing area. That chance may seem small, but that’s the largest we have seen in a while. The wind outlook is a 30% chance for us.

Strong thunderstorms will develop from 1pm-6pm. Heavy downpours are possible, so we could see potential for localized flooding. Some showers will move through this morning.

Back behind the cold front, cold air is funneling in right behind. This will allow any leftover moisture to transition into freezing rain/snow. Accumulations look low/trace amounts in higher elevations.

A High Wind Watch has been issued starting at 6PM and lasting until Friday at 12AM for Greenbrier, Summers, and Monroe counties.

A Freeze Warning has been issued starting at 2AM Friday until 10AM Friday for Buchanan, McDowell, and Wyoming counties.

A Wind Advisory has been issued starting at 6pm for Tazewell, Mercer, Bland, Wythe, Giles, eastern Raleigh, eastern Fayette, and Pocahontas counties until 12PM Friday.

This weekend we should be dry with a slim chance for light mountain snow on Sunday morning. Temperatures will be settled in the 50s and 40s. Highs tomorrow mid-upper 40s.
